Melting Mountains: An Urban-Rural Gathering
We’re going on a road trip and we’d love for you to join us.
Where? Sherman County, Oregon. Why? A few weeks ago, we told you about a tool created by The Washington Post that shows you the closest place that voted the opposite of where you live. In King County, 74 percent of voters went for Hillary Clinton, and in Sherman County, Oregon, 74 percent of voters went for Donald Trump. We asked you if you wanted to road trip with us, and dozens of you said yes.
So on Saturday, March 4 we’re making it happen in partnership with our friends at Crosscut. We’ll leave Seattle in a bus at 6 a.m. and plan to drive four hours or so to Moro, Oregon. That’s where we’ll meet Sandy Macnab, who was born and raised in Sherman County and used to work as a professor with Oregon State University studying agriculture. He’ll give us a tour of a couple spots in Sherman County and then we’ll meet a group of Sherman County residents for lunch and conversation in the afternoon. We’ll wrap up by 2:30 p.m. and aim to be back in Seattle by 7 p.m.
We also want to explain a little bit about why we’re doing this. Many of you may feel on edge, scared, frustrated, angry, ambivalent, joyous or vindicated. At The Evergrey, we want to bring together different perspectives to help us understand ourselves and our society better. Some of you may not see value in interacting with people who are on the other end of the political spectrum, and we respect that. We’ve also heard from several of you who are hungry for connections and conversations that help you understand viewpoints that are very different from your own. This trip is for those of you who are curious to listen to different perspectives — not to win an argument, but to understand where other people are coming from.
We hope you can join us!
