WE SHIP YOU NOT

WHAT IS IT? The Lake Washington Ship Canal is made up of the Montlake and Fremont “cuts,” two waterways that connect Lake Washington and Lake Union to the Ballard Locks and then Salmon Bay.

GEOGRAPHY: Locally, the ship canal marks an informal division between the northern and southern halves of Seattle that some locals are reluctant to cross due to distance and traffic.

HISTORY: Hiram M. Chittenden, for whom the Ballard Locks were eventually named, led the Army Corps of Engineers to connect Lake Washington to Salmon Bay with the canal. Why? To make it easier to transport logs, lumber, and fishing boats to Puget Sound. Construction lasted from 1909 to 1916.

LOCAL USAGE: “Oh, that party’s north of the ship canal? Guess I’m staying home to watch Netflix.”

NOW HERE’S WHAT’S GOING ON IN YOUR CITY

Traff-ick. Heads up drivers: northbound I-5 lanes and westbound Highway 2 lanes will be closed off Friday night through Monday morning due to repaving and construction, respectively.  And more closures are headed our way in August. 😫 (The Seattle Times)

‘Shell shocked.’ Miguel Martinez was looking forward to seeing his kids visiting from Florida after a long day of work at Columbia City Ale House Tuesday. But when he went outside for a break, Miguel was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. His colleagues, Brendan and Jeff Eagan, think there might’ve been a mix-up. They said Miguel, who’s now at Tacoma’s Northwest Detention Center, has a green card and “is legal in every way.” ICE officials said they have tried to deport him eight times between 2005 and 2015 and “targeted him as part of a broader immigration enforcement action in the Seattle area.” Now, Miguel’s coworkers are looking after his kids. “We’re going to take care of them, until they get home,” Jeff said. ‘What they’re doing is abuse.’ Yolany Padilla hasn’t seen her 6-year-old son in two months. She was detained when she came to the U.S. from Honduras seeking asylum and was separated from him at the border in May. Yolany’s since been released, but still can’t see him. Why? Because her legal counselors are now “being required to prove Yolany’s fitness as a parent, despite the fact she’s done nothing to call her parenting into question,” said Leta Sanchez, one of her attorneys. Now Yolany, two other moms, and the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project are part of a lawsuit demanding parents get reunited with their kids, stat. (KING 5)

Big moves in food. On Wednesday, Angela Stowell of Ethan Stowell Restaurants announced she’ll be heading up FareStart, an awesome local org giving food industry training to disadvantaged Seattleites. And Angela’s kind of a big deal. Her former gig: CEO of the big Ethan Stowell Restaurants group. In other food news, award-winning chef Renee Erickson’s seafoody Sea Creatures empire is expanding. She’s welcoming three restaurants — Westward, Saint Helens, and the Great State Burger chain — into her smörgåsbord. The restaurants’ previous owner, restaurateur Josh Henderson, said he’s letting them go to spend more time with the fam. (The Seattle Times, Eater)
