How to save the Showbox. A Seattle icon’s in trouble and the city’s largest historic preservation nonprofit is on it. Historic Seattle is leading a whole campaign to save the Showbox. To back up: The Showbox is a 79-year-old downtown music venue that’s seen everyone from Duke Ellington to 90s grunge acts to whoever lit things up there last week. News broke a week ago that a developer wants to replace it with a 44-story skyscraper, and now there’s a big push to save it, plenty of time to act as a permitting process gets going, and a big list of things to do, all spelled out on this campaign’s Save the Showbox page. “This is not a sprint; it’s a marathon,” Historic Seattle wrote to supporters on its Facebook page. “Please work with us to see it through to the end.” Want to meet more people who love the Showbox? How to save the orcas? It’s pretty wild that we can call orcas our neighbors. But the resident pods that hang out in the Salish Sea are starving to death, and nothing’s brought their story home like watching one of them — Tahlequah — hold on to her dead baby for more than a week. We wondered what all us land-dwelling, non-experts could do to help them, and several of you wrote in to wonder along with us. A key question: How can we bring up the low numbers of chinook salmon that the whales eat?

“I think it is wonderful that people are thinking about their responsibility for recovery — because they are responsible for this issue,” wrote reader Jerry Joyce. “Not just the old timers here but also the newcomers, because the development that brought them here and supports them, are major reasons for this problem.” Jerry is chair of the Puget Sound Ecosystem Monitoring Program and worked on a report that led to our governor’s Orca task force. And he pointed us to some good resources on all this — like the Orca Salmon Alliance, Long Live the Kings, and Wild Fish Conservancy Northwest. Cool it. Seattle’s felt like Miami the last couple weeks, but apparently that’s all over. The late-July heat wave that got us doing crazy things to stay cool ended this past weekend, and we won’t probably won’t see another one like it this year. What Starbucks is baking. A new bakery called Princi just opened near South Lake Union, and it’s not exactly a mom-and-pop shop. It’s the first of 1,000 standalone high-end Italian bakeries Starbucks is planning to open all over the country. One menu item you won’t see at your corner Starbucks? Fresh focaccia pizza.
