šŸ˜³ The ā€˜embarrassingā€™ thing weā€™re leaving on the trails

WHATā€™S ON THE PERFECT SEATTLE BUCKET LIST?

Seattle is not standing still in 2019. Thereā€™ll be more people. More construction to (try to) keep up with all that growth. A tunnel under downtown. A sports arena renovation. And a completely transformed waterfront.

But in a lot of ways, Seattleā€™s gonna be the same as ever. And no matter how long youā€™ve been around, thereā€™s probably something you havenā€™t done here that could be a highlight of your year.

So tell us: What should be on our 2019 Seattle bucket list? What are the things you can do in this city that are so great, you would challenge every local to try it next year?

Send us your ideas and weā€™ll wrap ā€˜em into a list to share back on December 31. Weā€™re looking for anything and everything: Indoors and outdoors, summer and winter, in the city proper and a short drive away. It can be an activity, a must-try dish, a scenic view or whatever uniquely local thing makes you feel like youā€™ve just made the most of living in Seattle. Ā» Tell us here what to put on our bucket list.

YOLO, Seattle. Letā€™s get to it.

NOW HEREā€™S WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON IN YOUR CITY

The ā€˜embarrassingā€™ thing weā€™re leaving on the trails. You havenā€™t built a cairn, now, have you? Because if you have stacked rocks just so on a trail somewhere, you should know that The Strangerā€™s Rich Smith finds you ā€œembarrassing,ā€ and really hopes youā€™ll stop. ā€œEvery time I see one I feel the need to destroy it,ā€ Rich writes in a post thatā€™ll make you laugh, if not rage. And if excessive cairn building has become a problem ā€” because unofficial cairns confuse hikers, can cause erosion, etc. etc. ā€” is it Instagramā€™s fault? Social media is one reason The Seattle Timesā€™ Gene Balk thinks the number of local hikers has doubled in a decade. ā€œDon’t get me wrong ā€” I love the expression of selves,ā€ Rich writes. ā€œBut sometimes I get mortally tired of the whole racket and must run into the woods to refresh.ā€ šŸŒ² (The Stranger)

Pucking finally. The whoops and claps went on for a while at Henryā€™s Tavern in South Lake Union yesterday morning, where fans watched live as the National Hockey League board of governors gave Seattle a pro hockey team. Itā€™ll hit the ice for the 2021-2022 season, it doesnā€™t have a name yet ā€” though Seattle Sockeyes won The Seattle Timesā€™ unofficial name tournament ā€” and Seattle Redditors couldnā€™t help but have a little fun with the newsā€¦ at the Seattle Marinersā€™ expense: ā€œ200 [bucks] says we get a Stanley Cup before the Mariners win the World Series,ā€ reads one comment. ā€œ300 says the Sonics win another NBA Championship before the Mariners win the World Series,ā€ reads another. šŸ˜‚ (Instagram, The Seattle Times, Reddit)

No love for the Lyftie. Capitol Hill just earned a ā€œLyftieā€ for being the ā€œmost visited late night neighborhood,ā€ and folks there arenā€™t exactly thrilled. Whatā€™s a Lyftie? An award Lyft made up to call out the local spots where its drivers make the most stops. Why isnā€™t it awesome? Because while the traffic’s good for business, Capitol Hill thinks of itself as a pretty darn walkable neighborhood. The Seattle Lyftie winner for ā€œmost visited late-night restaurant,ā€ by the way, is Big Marioā€™s Pizza on East Pike Street. Because huge pizza slices are everything. (Capitol Hill Seattle, Lyft)

ā€˜Iā€™ve never touched that much $ and I donā€™t think I ever will again.ā€™ Keith Booth was stopping by the Sumner Food Bank down in Sumner, Washington, when he saw a brown bag on the ground. He pulled out a $20 bill, put it back in, wondered if he should keep the bag, and gave it to the folks at the food bank instead. Turns out, there was $17,000 in cash inside. The food bank called the police, everyone waited the required three months to see if anyone would claim the cash, and when no one did, the food bank kept it ā€” after giving some of it to Keith, whoā€™s lived homeless on and off in Sumner for over seven years. Now Keithā€™s neighbors are running a GoFundMe to help him out. ā™„ļø (Tacoma News Tribune)

SUNā€™S OUT, FROSTā€™S OUT

First off: Congrats to reader David Messent, whose shares of The Evergrey won him a pair of tickets to this weekā€™s Global Washington Conference. šŸ™Œ

And second: You know how it goes. We get sunny days in the winter months, or we get relatively warm days in the winter months, but we canā€™t get ā€˜em both. ā„ļø

This weekā€™s clear skies mean no cloud-cover blanket and a whole lot of brrrr. So pack that hat and gloves and tell anyone you see stuck outside that our cityā€™s cold weather shelter is now open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. every night at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall.

Be kind out there, all. ā€” The Evergrey
