OUR TOP 6 FACEBOOK POSTS OF 2018

🗣 From you to the HQ 2s. It was a cynical tweet revisiting what now feels like an age-old question for Seattle: Is Amazon good or bad for a city? Many of you flocked to our Facebook page to offer your own advice for the tech giant’s HQ 2 cities. One of our favorite bits of wisdom was from Marika Malaea: “It’s like preparing for a break-up … it will eat up your life for awhile.”

🏙 All politics is local. But sometimes the politics of a place can push a person to want to leave. That was the sentiment in a Seattle Times op-ed that stirred up a lot of conversation on our page. So we asked you: What would it take for you to want to leave Seattle because of its political culture? Reader Angie Ferrannini Nielsen had this to say: “I love Seattle but we have to learn to respect other viewpoints. Progressivism should not be forced (nor should Conservatism) onto people whose viewpoints differ.”

📚 A refuge and a resource. Seattleite Edwin Lindo opened Estelita’s Library on Beacon Hill to give folks a place to read up on social justice and talk openly about politically charged issues. After we interviewed Lindo about his project, we asked readers for their own social justice reading suggestions and got some great recs, including an old classic, Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hears a Who!

❤️ ‘A love/hate relationship.’ We’ve got a lot of feelings about this brilliant, imperfect place we call home. When we asked what makes you want to stay in Seattle, you sent us a whole range of reasons, from the natural beauty all around us to what you summed up as “delusional hope.” We’ve got nothing but love for this town, but if we were in a Facebook relationship with Seattle, we’d definitely mark our status as “complicated.”

🗺 For the directionally challenged… or those who just love a good mnemonic device, many of you found our downtown streets explainer video helpful, or at least entertaining. All you have to remember are six words: Jesus Christ Made Seattle Under Protest.

🎸 Back to our roots. Grunge was one of the things that first put Seattle on the map, and we paid tribute at least a couple times this past year. Over the summer, our director Mónica Guzmán got a sneak peak at the MoPop Pearl Jam exhibit, and we marked SubPop’s 30th birthday by throwing it back to that one time Sub Pop’s former receptionist (who is now its CEO) pranked The New York Times by creating her own “Lexicon of Grunge.”
