Can you give me a brief bioāhowād you get into music? How did Sound Off! play a role in your musical career?Ā
I have been singing my whole life. I have only wanted to do this. This is the only thing I felt likeā¦I was really good at. Music was always being played āround me; my mom didnāt have much but music was something that we always had.
Sound Off! was awesome, it was what I felt like was my first āBIGā thing with my own personal music. I was so proud of myself for coming in second place, what is cool is people still know me mainly from the Sound Off! competition and that really says something about the dopeness of the show and what it can do for young folx.
Why do you think Seattleās music scene has always been so vibrant?
Well, I feel like itās easy. If you make music you can come to a show and meet two people, chances are those two people know everyone you need to know to get on the next bill. Itās very welcoming and it is an amazing community, we are all so close, we are a big family.
Favorite local venue youāve played? Favorite local venue to see a show at?
My favorite venue is Neumos, itās just my spot. I am always on the hill so whenever I can book Neumos I get really excited. I also like low key house shows, the vibe is super chill and the music is always good.
How would you describe your sound? Who are some of your influences?
Iād describe my sound as New Wave / R&B / Electronic / Soul / Eclectic typeness.
My influences range from Amy Winehouse, Jazmine Sullivan, India Arie, Jill Scott and Lianne La Havas to KAYTRANADA, James Blake, ABRA, Katy B, Robyn and Kelela.
Your songĀ Mr. PrezĀ seems especially timely right now with the renewed energy that the Black Lives Matter movement has had. Can you talk through writing that song?
Well, I remember that I wrote it right around the time Trump got elected. I remember there was a storm outside and I also remember the Syrian bombings on the news as well. I was like āTHE FU**ING WORLD IS GONNA END!!!!ā When I sat down on my laptop the words just started to flow and the song was born.Ā But youāre right, the song is STILL relevant todayā¦unfortunately.
COVID has stopped all live music for the foreseeable future, do you have any ideas or plans for what these next few months might look like for you? Are you working on anything?
Well, itās all up in the air for sure. I am tryna just take it day by day. I do music because I love it and times like this when you sort of have nothingā¦that is when you realize why you do what you love.
Life is short and I canāt breathe unless I make music and sing, even if I can only sing to myself these days ha-ha. BUT I am performing Mr. Prez at the Central Districtās Umoja Parade March on August 1st at Jimi Hendrix Park. The event is 1-9 pm. This is my first step up on the stage since March so I am stoked.
