Look who tied the knot five years ago 💍

“Being just a few feet away from Tom Hanks and hearing him talk about writing was an incredible experience last night,” Berrak wrote. “It’s something that will be part of my creative arsenal for those moments at 3 in the morning when writer’s block is weighing heavy on my shoulders.”

Thanks to Seattle Arts and Lectures for putting on a great event, and to Berrak for sharing all the fun she had. 🙌

Lots of special someones are gonna celebrate tomorrow. It’s the five-year anniversary of the very first time same-sex couples could get married in our state. On Dec. 9, 2012, 138 couples tied the knot at Seattle City Hall (check out the pics), a month after Washington voters made it legal. Grab a tissue before listening to their voices in this video from the King County Courthouse. 💍 (KNKX)

On the streets. So many of our neighbors live without permanent shelter that our area has the third largest homeless population in the whole country — just behind New York and Los Angeles. City officials say a new funding plan should move 7,399 people into stable housing in 2018, up from 3,026 this year. Let’s hope they’re right. (The Seattle Times)

A new KeyArena by 2020. Mayor Jenny Durkan just signed a plan to give our sports arena a $600 million makeover. Sports fans are psyched: The new arena could get us a professional hockey team, and maybe — just maybe — bring the NBA back to Seattle. (Seattle Met)

‘Keep talking and reading and processing.’ Last year’s election came as a shock to a lot of locals, and reader and book guru Paul Constant helped start a book club to get those Seattleites “reading through it.” The club turned one year old this week, and Paul has some observations. One tip: The group found The Righteous Mind super useful, but not the wildly popular Hillbilly Elegy. Curious about the group? It meets the first Wednesday of every month at Third Place Books in Seward Park, and anyone is welcome. (The Seattle Review of Books)

Where’d all our rain go? Leave those raincoats in the closet: We’re heading into what might be the driest stretch of days in Seattle in 18 years. (Seattlepi)

Reader and mixologist Andrew Bohrer designed a delicious cocktail for our one-year anniversary party last week. (Thanks to our drink sponsor Dent for making that possible!) We’ve heard some requests to share the recipe, so here it is.

The Forevergrey or Evergrey Punch:

1 oz 2 bar Bourbon
1 oz Giffard Apricot Liqueur
1/2 oz orange juice
1/2 oz lemon juice
1/4 oz St Elizabeth’s Allspice Dram
2 dashes Scrappy’s Aromatic Bitters
1 dash Scrappy’s Cardamom Bitters

Shake, strain over ice OR chill all ingredients, pour into punch bowl with a couple bottles of sparkling wine, ladle into punch cups.

Sip responsibly. 😃 — The Evergrey
