There’s something ‘unseemly’ about these Amazon bids. The numbers are in, and a whopping 238 cities in all but seven states have put in bids to host Amazon’s second big headquarters. Amazon’s promising 50,000 jobs to the lucky city, so it’s no surprise it’s been a frenzy. But has the desperation crossed a line? The contest is a “flurry of embarrassing promo efforts by North American cities groveling to serve,” wrote Crosscut’s Knute Berger. And Seattleite Tim Egan put out a warning to hopeful cities in The New York Times. “You think you can shape Amazon? Not a chance,” he wrote. “It will shape you.”
And then there was the plane… Did you see it? The city of Little Rock, Arkansas, flew a plane over downtown Seattle yesterday with a banner that read, “Hey Amazon. It’s not you. It’s us.” Why? Little Rock decided not to bid for HQ2 after all, and used the “breakup” to launch a campaign encouraging people to… move to Little Rock? Yeah, it’s a head-scratcher for us too. 🤔 (MyNorthwest)
It’s sweater season, y’all. And if you want to update your wardrobe with some Seattle-made threads, check out this list of 28 great clothing stores and boutiques in the city. (Seattle Met)
Speaking of things made locally… Did you know Cinnabon started in Seattle? Did we just make you crave that gooey, million-calorie cinnamon roll icing? Yeah. Well. Join the club. (Seattle Met)
Help out your local media. The South Seattle Emerald and Capitol Hill Seattle — two awesome neighborhood community news sites — are looking for support to keep doing what they’re doing. We’re big fans of everyone who works hard to help us all understand our city, and these folks are no exception. Check ‘em out.
