We Seattleites love our neighborhoods. But their names and boundaries aren’t as steady as you might think.

We learned that last week when we took your neighborhood mapping questions to City Hall. Kathy Nyland, who heads up the Department of Neighborhoods, called the ways boundaries shift and change “organic.”

But as historian and Crosscut columnist Knute Berger pointed out to us via email, that doesn’t mean they’re always community approved.

“The real estate business plays a role in naming,” Knute wrote. “For example, there was an apartment complex on MLK in Judkins Park called ‘West Leschi.’ Also, up around 23rd and Madison they were trying out ‘Madison Heights.’ It’s not entirely ‘organic.’ Hot neighborhoods like ‘Ravenna’ have spread over the years beyond their old boundaries, informal as they were. Some of it is marketing, pure and simple, as real estate agents try to get maximum value.”
