‘We’re taught to feel lucky if it isn’t worse.’ Last month, five women accused Seattle nightlife entrepreneur David Meinert of sexual misconduct and assault. Yesterday, six more women, including a Seattle Times reporter and a local political consultant, came forward with similar allegations. Elise Ballard, founder of catering company Umami Seattle, told KUOW reporter Sydney Brownstone that David sexually assaulted her in the early 2000s at Capitol Hill Block Party, which he ran at the time. Another woman, identified only as Jenna, alleged that he forcibly kissed her and slapped her in the face each time she pushed him away. “It was like he was trying to play a sexy game, like it’s all a joke,” Jenna said. David has not responded to these new allegations, KUOW reported. (KUOW)

Seventeen days. That’s how long Tahlequah, a mother orca, has been carrying her dead calf, which is beginning to decompose. Researchers aren’t sure if she’s eating, either. Although orcas can survive for about a month without eating, “the work of pushing the calf day after day through the water adds physical effort to her burden of loss,” writes reporter Lynda V. Mapes. Scientists are also keeping a close eye on J50, a young orca in Tahlequah’s pod, who may be starving and have an infection. Researchers and members of the Lummi Nation are ready to help J50 with medicated salmon. But conditions have to be just right to get it to her. 🌊 (The Seattle Times)

Thanks, Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam is playing Safeco Field again tonight for their second concert in their big Home Shows series, which is expected to raise $12 million (!) to fight homelessness. In a write-up for Crosscut, local music writer Charles R. Cross said he was pretty moved by their first show on Wednesday — particularly lead singer Eddie Vedder’s dedication of their hit “Even Flow” to “our homeless neighbors” and his call for the audience to have more empathy. “You can’t live here, whether you’re in a rock band or not, without being aware that homelessness keeps getting worse,” Charles wrote. “Seattle tops most national polls — just like it once topped music charts — when it comes to the percentage of the population who are homeless.” (Crosscut)
