🎨 Meet Washington's “O.G.” George W. Bush

Yes, we can still take day trips without you, viaduct. Thanks for tagging #theevergrey, Sid!

During their trip, Abraham and his partner stopped by the Washington State History Museum and checked out an exhibit with paintings by Seattle’s own Jacob Lawrence. That’s where they got more familiar with someone with a very familiar name: George W. Bush.

No, not the former president — “the OG (Original George),” as Abraham called him. George was reported to be one of the very first black landowners in Washington State, where he moved to around 1844 after being blocked from staying in Oregon, which barred black folks from living there at the time. One of Jacob Lawrence’s rarely seen paintings is about George’s journey to Washington, where he eventually settled in Tumwater.

I thought you’d be tickled by the name and the story of the person with that name, which does also cut really deeply into the history of black people living in the PNW,” he told us. “And the museum’s a great reason to head down to Tacoma, particularly if you’ve got kids or like cupcakes. (There’s a great little cupcake shop across the street and the architecture of the museum and courthouse next door is awesome.)”

Thanks for telling us about your trip, Abraham!
