THE MAN BEHIND THE ARENA

MEET THIS CHANGEMAKER: Rico Quirindongo, architect at DLR Group

WHAT HE’S DOING: Rico’s biggest project is renovating the former Key Arena. He believes that good design begins with listening to a community. And architecture, as he sees it, is a way to connect and empower the city he calls home.

Rico likes to say he doesn’t care about buildings, just people. But it’s clear that both are pretty important to him when you look at the projects he’s had a hand in — like The Northwest African American Museum, MarketFront at Pike Place, and now, a new home for Seattle sports and entertainment.

» Watch our one-minute video to hear how Rico wants to design an new arena for everyone.

FUN FACT: Rico’s first project was designing a house for a King County librarian.

QUOTABLE: “Buildings are a reflection of the communities that they’re in and the communities that they’re serving.”

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED: Arena construction is already underway at Seattle Center . Curious where the design process stands? Check in with the city here.

WE’RE GROUNDED

About 70,000 people work for Boeing in our state, and this week’s bad news is hitting them hard. “It’s like a being under a dark cloud in there,” one assembly line worker told The Seattle Times.

And no wonder: The U.S. just grounded Boeing’s best-selling plane, after some 42 countries had done the same worldwide. The reason? When a new 737 MAX 8 crashed over the weekend — killing 157 people — it was the second deadly crash on a MAX in several months. Even though Boeing has said it’s confident its planes are OK, the worries got way bigger than the assurances.

How many jets are we talking about? There were about 400 MAX planes flying globally before the groundings, including 65 in the U.S. Just a handful per day were passing through Sea-Tac Airport.

While Boeing tries to get its own business back on track, it’s going to have to answer to others. Norwegian Air is the first airline to demand that Boeing compensate it for lost flight time, and it probably won’t be the last.

In other news…

This won’t surprise you. Seattle has a whole group — the Jet City Saber Guild — dedicated to the ins and out of light saber combat. And it meets every Thursday. (The Stranger)

A bigger megaphone. Amazon dropped upwards of $14 million on lobbying last year, and that’s more than twice what it spent in 2014. (GeekWire)

Looking good. Here’s a photo tour of some of our most beloved barber shops and beauty salons, where “your barber or stylist becomes a friend, a therapist or a mentor.” (South Seattle Emerald)
