🎨 What happens when an artist and a developer collaborate

What’s up in Pioneer Square

The building at the corner of First Avenue and Cherry Street contains secrets. From the outside, it looks like your average Pioneer Square haunt — there’s a coffee shop, a bar, and a clothing store on the ground floor.

But step inside, climb the stairs, and you’ll find more than a dozen artists hard at work. There’s a photographer experimenting with an antique process, a painter prepping for a show, a jeweler twisting metal.

All of them were brought together by Jane Richlovsky, co-owner of The Good Arts Building. Her goal: Keep artists painting, sculpting and sharing ideas in Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, just like they’ve been doing for over 100 years.

QUOTABLE: “There’s a kind of inspiration you can only get from being in the middle of everything — in the middle of this historic neighborhood.” —Jane

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED: Stop by The Good Arts Building during Pioneer Square’s next First Thursday art walk on June 6 to meet the artists and snag a new treasure for under $100. And check out our video to see what happens when an artist and a developer decide to set aside their differences and collaborate.

Help us help you: What are your questions about Pioneer Square? Submit ’em over on our website, and we’ll pick three for you to vote on next week. The winning questions will be the subject of our last installment in the series.

What Seattle is talking about

E-scooters are (more than likely) coming to Seattle. Mayor Jenny Durkan, who has apparently made a 180 on her earlier stance against scooters, announced Wednesday that the city plans to introduce a pilot program — assuming that scooter providers meet a list of conditions.

Among them: Requiring “full indemnification provisions” so that riders who are injured can sue the scooter companies, instead of going after the cities who allow them. The mayor raised three other concerns in a GeekWire op-ed: safety, equity, and figuring out a way for scooters to complement Seattle’s existing bike share program.

Up until now, the Emerald City has been a stubborn holdout on scooter sharing. Cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Austin, Portland and Tacoma, have all allowed companies to set up shop in their cities — although not without controversy.

So what’s next for Seattle? The mayor’s office says it will take several months for staff to gather community input and craft the pilot program. It expects to begin accepting permit applications from scooter companies in the fall, with roll-out anticipated in early 2020.

In other news…

Kids who run away or skip school will no longer be held in juvenile detention in Washington state, following the passage of a law that youth advocates say is a crucial step in eliminating the school-to-prison pipeline. (Crosscut)

What would you build if you could create a Seattle neighborhood from scratch? That’s the question being raised as a state committee figures out what to do with 25 acres of vacant land near the Magnolia Bridge. An open house for the project will take place next Wednesday at the Ballard VFW. (KUOW)

The outdoors are supposed to be a place to escape the worries of everyday life, but our public lands aren’t always welcoming to folks who identify as nonbinary or LGBTQ. OUT There Adventures, a group started by Seattleite Elyse Rylander, is working to change that. (The Seattle Times)

Which is faster — Sea-Tac Airport or Paine Field? Two King 5 reporters decided to settle the score once and for all in a head-to-head race from Green Lake. (KING 5)
