What Seattle is talking about

Can urban planning help curb gun violence? Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant raised that theory during a meeting of the Human Services, Equitable Development, and Renter Rights Committee earlier this week.

The discussion came a few days after 19-year-old Royal Lexing was murdered in a drive-by shooting that happened in broad daylight on East Union Street near 21st Avenue.

The shooting is one of five that have taken place in that part of Central District in the past year and a half. And, because Lexing’s murder took place while SPD gang emphasis patrols were in the area, neighborhood leaders are looking to other solutions.

The latest idea? Use traffic-calming elements like speed bumps to slow down cars and make drive-by shootings less likely. Sawant said she plans to host a community meeting to gather more suggestions.

In other news…

Our region has a severe shortage of two blood types, and the American Red Cross and Bloodworks Northwest are offering incentives to bring in potential donors. (The Seattle Times)

Seattle’s police reform efforts took a major step back yesterday. A federal judge ruled that SPD must do more to improve transparency and accountability when officers are accused of wrongdoing. (The Seattle Times)

It’s an “international extravaganza,” right in the heart of Renton. If you’ve never had a chance to shop for pickled veggies or imported chocolate at DK Market, you’re missing out. (KNKX)

Another place that can satisfy your sweet tooth? Hood Famous. The bakery, known for its ube cheesecake, recently expanded to the Chinatown-International District — and a cocktail menu is in the works. (Eater)

This is your community

Our members are the folks who make what we do here at The Evergrey possible. And this month, we’re doing something a little different to celebrate the role they play in our community.

Our Member Wine Down event will be an opportunity for members to meet, connect, and share their ideas on how we can make this scrappy little newsletter even better. And, as the name suggests, there will be wine. 🍷

It’s all going down at Elsom Cellars on May 31. Not a member yet? Let’s change that. Hope to see you there!

Let’s get together

👋  Save the date! The Evergrey’s June Meetup will kick off our neighborhood spotlight on Lake City. We’ll be hangin’ at Hellbent Brewing on Monday, June 3. Come meet your neighbor Evergrey’ers! (Lake City)

You said it

Last week, we shared a video about Seattle’s favorite extreme sport: avoiding dive-bombing crows. And reading your responses on Facebook and Instagram has been the birdseed-flavored icing on the cake.

Some were reactions of disbelief:

“Wait. This is not a joke? This is really a thing? I am new here.” —Kathye Fetsko Petrie

While others were quick to confirm it:

“Totally real. Last spring they made a nest near my front door. For two weeks they dive-bombed anything that came close.” Seán Kendig

Some of you offered helpful advice:

“Just make friends with them. A few treats and you stop being a threat.” —Melissa Wolfstone

And some of you made us never want to leave the house again:

“Last summer I was dive bombed on two different occasions! The first time it actually broke the skin and circled back around to attack me again until I ran away! I emailed the UW professor who did the study, and he told me not to walk near there again during nesting season because they’d recognize me.” —Leslie ‘Beard’ Haynsworth
