🚘 Why Seattle likes to drive in circles

It's never too early to start dreaming about the weekend, especially with Memorial Day coming up. Thanks for tagging @theevergrey on Instagram, Jordan!

What Seattle is talking about

Our orcas are in trouble. And a new installment in The Seattle Times’ ongoing Hostile Waters series explores the impact that humans are having on the local population of southern resident killer whales.

The latest story focuses on how the animals use sound to hunt a dwindling supply of chinook salmon in the Salish Sea. Some researchers believe that noise from increased ship traffic affects the orcas’ ability to track down their prey and communicate with one another.

Most scientists agree: The main problem facing our local orcas is a lack of food. But the presence of ships could be accelerating their extinction by making it even more difficult for them to hunt.

This past legislative session, Washington lawmakers passed new regulations for commercial whale-watching boats that require them to keep at least a 300-yard buffer zone from the animals.

But many feel the rules don’t go far enough. The Southern Orca Resident Task Force recommended a distance of at least 650 yards — something that industry leaders said would amount to a whale-watching ban in Washington state.

Today’s how-to

Ever feel like you’re driving in circles? Turns out, that might be a good thing, at least according to the folks at the Seattle Department of Transportation.

We had a lot of questions for them about Seattle’s friendly neighborhood traffic circles. Who keeps them looking good? What direction are we supposed to go in again? Do they actually make driving in Seattle safer?

Check out our handy video explainer for the answers.

Think you’ve mastered the traffic circle — and all the other roadway-related challenges Seattle throws your way? Turns out, the city is on the hunt for Seattle’s safest driver, and there’s a cash prize involved.
