🕰️ What should go in the Space Needle's time capsule?

You gotta admit: It's a pretty spectacular spot to stash our city's secrets.

What Seattle is talking about

It was built in 1962 as a symbol of Seattle’s future. In recent years, though, the Space Needle has become an important landmark in the story of our city’s past.

This fall, workers will seal up a 43-year time capsule, set to be opened on the Space Needle’s centennial: April 20, 2062. And the best part? They want your submissions.

Six spots in the capsule are open to the public, and there’s a contest to determine what goes inside.

Among the rules: Items must fit inside a clear 3-by-3-by-3 inch box, it can’t be alive, and it can’t be perishable. (So it’s probably best to enjoy your Beecher’s flagship cheddar in 2019.)

It’s actually the second time capsule that’s been stored at the Space Needle over the years; the original capsule was forgotten about for 15 years before it was finally opened in 2017.

Maybe this time someone will send the city a calendar reminder?

In other news…

A drought emergency has been declared across much of Washington state by Gov. Jay Inslee, with snowpack at its fourth-lowest level in 30 years. The Seattle metro area isn’t included in the declaration, but rural communities and areas that rely on crop irrigation could suffer severe water shortages this summer and fall. (KUOW)

Remember the days when you could just call up a star NCAA football quarterback and invite him over to your house for dinner? Yeah, us neither, but this story sure is heartwarming. (The Seattle Times)

CPR saves lives, but not everyone has the time or resources for an official training course. That’s why a new program from our local public health department is loaning out boxes filled with CPR training materials to local businesses and community organizations. This could be you on Hood Canal.

Let’s explore the PNW: Hood Canal

This summer we’re going to explore three destinations to get out into the wild and enjoy the gems right in Seattle’s backyard.

We’ll highlight the people, outdoor activities, and stories from each location — all with the support of our partners-in-adventure ReachNow, the Seattle-based car-sharing company.

Our first destination is the Hood Canal area, on the eastern edge of the Olympic Peninsula. We wanna hear from those of you who have been there before: What should we check out around Hood Canal?

Send us insights and we’ll add your recommendations to our upcoming itinerary.

New to ReachNow? Download the app and celebrate Memorial Day with these great deals: $80/day, $200/3 days, or $250/5 days. Promo valid May 22-29.

You said it

Hungry? We were too after asking our Facebook friends what food best represented Seattle.

Some of you were right on the nose (or should we say tongue) with these local favorites:

“Frans Chocolates.” —Kalisto Zenda Nanen

“Ellenos Greek Yogurt or Theo Chocolate.” —Carla Vikingstad

Some of you gave great background:

“…the food that best represents Seattle is probably those non-native Himalayan blackberry bushes that grow throughout the city. No matter where I’ve lived in Seattle, I’m always within half a mile of a blackberry bush.” —Deborah Barnard

Some of you knew which foods did NOT qualify as a Seattle flavor:

“Certainly not bagels.” —Gabby de Janasz

Some of you were a little too on par:

“Bland white rice.” Wilthalri’o Coachman-Jensen

And we couldn’t pass up this great word play:

“If someone made a jam and named it Traffic, that’d be it.” Al Boss

In the end, we narrowed it down to the four options pictured above. Head over to Instagram to tell us which one is most like you.
