♻️ Going green, beyond the grave

They don't call it the Emerald City for nothing.

What Seattle is talking about

As Seattle’s skyline keeps rising up, more and more trees are coming down. And a new citizen effort called The Last 6,000 wants to make sure we realize what we’re losing before they’re gone.

The objective is simple: Find, identify, and catalog Seattle’s remaining “majestic trees” — of which they estimate there are roughly 6,000. The group bestows the “majestic” designation to any tree with a diameter greater than 30 inches.

Seattle’s municipal code — which offers protections to “exceptional trees” — is a bit squishier. The diameter for exceptional trees varies by species, and they can be removed if they seriously limit a lot’s development potential.

That city settles roughly a dozen or so tree-related disputes each year, such as the current battle over a 90-foot-tall tulip tree in Queen Anne.

Meanwhile, Seattle’s “tree ambassadors” keep counting. They aim to catalog 1,000 trees by the end of the year.
