What Seattle is talking about

The number of hate crimes reported in Washington state saw a dramatic uptick between 2013 and 2017, according to a new study of FBI data by a security company called SafeHome.

The analysis also found that Seattle was one of five U.S. cities with the most significant increase in hate crimes during that time period. In Seattle, a majority of the 234 incidents reported in 2017 were motivated by a victim’s race or ethnicity.

Pride Month brought several instances of vandalism and graffiti directed toward members of our region’s LGBTQ community — including a display outside a Renton church that was damaged with explosives.

To address the increase in reported hate crimes, Seattle City Council passed legislation earlier this year that aims to make it easier for the city attorney’s office to prosecute suspects.

In other news…

Three men were stabbed downtown yesterday in what police say was a random, unprovoked attack. The suspect, who stripped off his clothes as he ran from the scene, was arrested a short time later. The victims are all expected to survive. (NBC News)

It’s called smokejumping, and it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: Jumping out of an airplane to fight a forest fire. This report dives into the fascinating North Cascades origins of the daredevil fire-fighting tactic. (KNKX)

Know any place to stash a few thousand books? Books to Prisoners, the Seattle nonprofit that made headlines earlier this year for pushing back against a state ban on prison book donations, needs a new home. (The Stranger)

You said it

It’s no secret that dating in Seattle isn’t a walk in the park (unless your Tinder date literally invites you on a walk through Volunteer Park, but we digress). Still, we turned to our Instagram friends and asked a few Qs about love in the 206.

Here’s what we learned:

Out of 252 users, 34 percent of you said you don’t enjoy dating in Seattle. Yes, that means well over half of you are NOT having it. But that doesn’t mean there’s no effort: 62 percent of you met your most recent date online.

Eighty percent of you admitted that you have either ghosted someone or been ghosted after meeting someone IRL, but only a mere 16 percent of you have walked out midway through a date.

Long story short: Dating in Seattle is almost as anxiety-inducing as sitting on a Lime Bike the day after the Solstice Parade. 😬

That’s why we’re going to have another Modern Love Dating Show this Thursday at the Collective (and we know this is appealing, because 70 percent of you admitted you’d be down to watch a dating game show!).

Check out the pics from the last time we hosted this game show — or come see for yourself. The fun starts at 6:30 p.m. at The Collective in South Lake Union. See you there, lovebirds.
