What Seattle is talking about

Blindfolded and sedated mountain goats are once again soaring high above Olympic National Park as wildlife experts begin the second summer of relocating the animals to the Cascades.

The goat-by-goat capture plays out like a high-profile kidnapping (pun intended): The animals are shot with an opioid-filled dart or a net gun, then tied up, blindfolded, and flown via helicopter to a staging area to prepare for ground transport. The photos are priceless.

The relocation effort is taking place because mountain goats are not native to the Olympic Mountains and because their natural tendency to seek out salt has led to confrontations between the animals and humans.

So what happens when the goats get to their new digs? Park officials estimate that between 65 and 70 of the 100 goats they released into the Cascades last summer ended up surviving the winter. Later this season, students from Western Washington University will hike into the range to observe the transported animals, who are being tracked with GPS collars.

Meanwhile, several road and trail closures are planned in Olympic National Park as relocation work continues this summer.

In other news…

The King County Sheriff’s Office says it made a mistake when it handed over personal data for thousands of individuals to federal immigration officers during a 17-month period that ended in May. The blunder was in direct violation of the county’s sanctuary policy. (Crosscut)

Capitol Hill’s mystery soda pop machine got a whole lot more mysterious when it up and vanished last summer. One year later, and all we’re left with are Internet memes and memories. (Capitol Hill Seattle)

Joey Pollitt works full-time at Goodbar in Pioneer Square but has struggled to secure housing while living in a homeless shelter. Click on the photo to hear his story.

Working and waiting

The number of people experiencing homelessness in King County may have dropped slightly this year, but more than 10,000 of our neighbors are still unhoused.

Last summer, we talked to some of them about potential solutions to our region’s housing crisis. Earlier this year, we also learned about FareStart’s job training program, designed to help Seattleites find and maintain stable employment.

Now we’re asking: What does it take to hold down a job while struggling with unstable housing? And, is a job enough to find stability?

Joey Pollitt is a longtime Seattleite. He had a place in Belltown for a decade, but lost it in 2005 after he was laid off from his recycling job.

After that, Joey picked up work as a roofer and a Real Change vendor. For the past five years, he’s been employed full-time, washing dishes and doing kitchen prep at Pioneer Square restaurant Good Bar while sleeping at the nearby shelter Union Gospel Mission.

The income has been steady, but as Seattle’s rents rise, Joey says he’ll need help to find a place of his own.

Hear more from Joey in our short video profile.
