What Seattle is talking about

“I’m not afraid that they get me … I’m afraid for my family.” The debate over immigration rights turned deadly over the weekend, when police shot and killed a man who was attacking a Tacoma detention center.

Willem Van Spronsen, 69, of Vashon Island was reportedly suicidal and “ready to end it” when he armed himself with a rifle and began throwing unspecified “incendiary devices” at the Northwest Detention Center. Officers fired on Spronsen as he was attempting to ignite a propane tank.

At the time of the attack, about 100 people were outside the building to protest the Trump administration’s immigration raids, which were set to begin on Sunday. Crosscut reports that only a small number of arrests had taken place over the weekend, but many fear the roundups will continue into the week.

Here in the Seattle area, that fear has led many parents to compile 34 pages of notarized documents called “safety packets.” The papers, prepared with the help of a legal advocate, designate a caregiver in the event of a parent’s deportation and are seen as a safeguard to prevent children from ending up in government custody.

“I’m not afraid that they get me,” a Maple Valley mother who has worked the late shift at McDonald’s for the past 13 years told Crosscut. “But I’m afraid for my family.”

In other news…

Prime Day continues today, and strikes involving Amazon warehouse workers around the world have left many consumers wondering whether they should boycott the two-day sale in solidarity. Whatever you decide, know that there are plenty of small businesses here in Seattle that could use some love today and every day. The Intentionalist’s directory is a good place to start. (Quartz)

Not long ago, Westlake Park was a part of downtown that most people avoided. But the Downtown Seattle Association has managed to “make an asset out of a liability” by adding furniture, playground equipment, and games like chess. (The Seattle Times)

Megan Rapinoe isn’t running for president, but Jay Inslee says she has a spot in his cabinet if he makes it to the White House. “My first act will be to ask Megan Rapinoe to be my secretary of State,” Inslee said at a conference over the weekend. Rapinoe also appeared on “Meet the Press” on Sunday. (The Hill, NBC)

Today’s how-to: Enjoy a movie under the stars

It’s mid-July, and that means the days are getting oh-so-slightly shorter. But pre-9 p.m. sunsets come with their own silver lining: Outdoor movies!

Outdoor movies in Seattle are generally free admission and first-come, first served. Blankets and low-backed lawn chairs are allowed.

Here are some of the best places to catch an al fresco flick this season:

🎬 Center City Cinema: The City of Seattle is hosting a family-friendly lineup of outdoor movies at four downtown-area parks through Aug. 30. Don’t miss the original “Willy Wonka” on Aug. 2 at Westlake Park or “Up” this Friday at Cascade Playground.

🎬 Movies at Marymoor: It can be a haul to get out to Redmond if you don’t already live or work on the Eastside, but if you need a midweek diversion, Marymoor is the place to go. The series runs Wednesdays through August.

🎬 Movies at the Mural: Head to Seattle Center on Saturday evenings from July 27 to Aug. 24 for a mix of new releases and classic favorites, including “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Dirty Dancing.”

🎬 Seattle Outdoor Cinema: The O.G. of Seattle’s outdoor movie scene is back for its 25th season and will be hosting screenings on Saturday evenings at the South Lake Union Discovery Center. This year’s lineup includes cult classics like “The Life Aquatic” and “The Matrix.” All movies are 21+.

Looking for other options? Seattle Met has the granddaddy of all outdoor movie lists on its website. See you under the stars!
