What Seattle is talking about

Rising housing costs and redevelopment are making it harder for people all over Seattle to stay put in one location. And that includes service providers.

A homeless shelter known as the Dutch Shisler Sobering Center recently closed its doors to make room for a new 10-story building in the Denny Triangle area, The Seattle Times reports. Without that resource, emergency responders have been sending intoxicated individuals to the local ER to sober up.

Community Psychiatric Clinic, the nonprofit that runs the center, sold the sobering center last year and bought a church in Georgetown as a replacement location. But neighborhood pushback has delayed its opening.

And it’s not an isolated problem. The U District’s ROOTS Young Adult Shelter is looking for a new home as the church where it’s currently housed prepares for redevelopment.

But amid all the land use notice signs and boarded-up buildings, some new city rules could provide a glimmer of hope. By offering incentives to building owners who keep vacant spaces occupied up until demolition, the new policies are creating opportunities for nonprofits like Weld and Mary’s Place to secure temporary housing for people who are experiencing homelessness.

Meanwhile, advocates are worried the lack of a centrally located sobering center will push more intoxicated people onto the streets, especially when autumn hits. The alternative — an ER bed — is also exponentially more expensive. The Times reports the average cost of a bed at Harborview is $2,000 a night, compared to $68.70 at the sobering center.

In other news…

Seattle’s police reform efforts are reaching a critical juncture as some local leaders call for the city to renegotiate its union contract with the Seattle Police Officers Guild. Reform advocates say the guild has fallen short on community accountability while SPD has pointed to problems with officer retention and department morale. (KUOW)

One man’s structural failures are another man’s treasure — especially if that man is tasked with tearing down the Alaskan Way Viaduct. A new behind-the-scenes video from WSDOT explains how crews are taking the highway down span by span, all while keeping nearby traffic and pedestrians safe. (GeekWire)

Already feeling some post-Prime Day buyers’ remorse? Here’s one thing that might make you feel better: Local recycling company Ridwell is offering free pickup of your Amazon packaging envelopes between now and Aug. 1. (Seattle Met)

You said it

A couple weeks ago, we asked our Facebook friends what they expect to see on a night out in Seattle. You all sent us so many spot-on ideas, that we had to bring them to life.

Our challenge to you: Next time you’re heading out on the town (maybe even this weekend) see if you can get five in a row. Share your updated card on your Instagram story and tag us — you can grab the unmarked Bingo board from our Instagram.

Have fun out there, and don’t forget to save us a Seattle dog. 🌭

Let’s get together

🤗 Summertime is a great time to melt that Seattle freeze. After such an amazing Speed Friending event the other week, we’re inviting the community out for another round on Wednesday, Aug. 14. Be sure to snag your spot before we fill up. (Belltown)
