🤔 4 big questions for Seattle in 2020

See anything yet?

Crystal ballin’

We’re starting the new year with a look into our crystal ball — sort of. 2019 is done, but many of its biggest stories are just getting started. That got us wondering: What 2019 local questions could find answers in 2020?

Come with us for a glimpse of Seattle’s future …

• How far left is our city council ready to lean?

Seattle voters sent a strong message to Amazon in the November city council elections. So…now what? Will we see another head tax proposal? Are safe injection sites in the city’s immediate future? What about all those promises of rent control? The new council takes the dais on Jan. 6. We’ll get the popcorn ready. 🍿

• Will Seattle invest enough to make a dent in the homelessness crisis?

The city announced earlier this month that it will spend a record-breaking $110 million to build affordable housing, but experts say rising need could outpace supply. Meanwhile, permanent supportive housing is emerging as a promising solution to chronic homelessness, but it comes with an even higher price tag.

• Will we start rooting for the Seattle Sockeyes?

Seattle’s new NHL team won’t make its debut until 2021, but the team’s name, colors, and logos could be revealed as soon as February or March. Among the possibilities: the Totems, the Emeralds, the Rainiers, and the Sockeyes.

• Is our transit system about to get derailed?

Tim Eyman’s car-tabs initiative remains on hold as the state supreme court considers whether the voter-approved measure to limit such fees was unconstitutional. Meanwhile, Sound Transit will continue collecting the higher car-tab taxes that voters approved in 2016 to fund light rail expansion and other transportation projects. A related question: Will Sound Transit finally figure out how to keep the Link escalators running in 2020? Only time will tell.
