🍴 Seattle food news: A round-up of hellos and goodbyes

Carlo Chalisea owns and runs the Peruvian restaurant, Don Lucho's. It is one of the restaurants TikTok incluencer Teena Thach has highlighted.

What Seattle is talking about (Food Edition)

Seattle Restaurant Week returns on Sunday. For folks who cherish the bi-annual tradition where restaurants around town offer three-course dinners for a set price, you’ll be pleased to know it’s still happening this year! Restaurants will be offering take-out options for the most part and they teamed up with Plate of Nations to highlight restaurants in southeast Seattle. (The Stranger)

Local TikTok influencer helps BIPOC-owned Seattle restaurants go viral. Teena Thach is a social media manager who posted a video of a trip to Mangosteen which blew up and ultimately boosted the restaurant’s sales. After seeing the impact her video had, Thach has been highlighting other BIPOC-owned restaurants giving them boosts, too. (Eater Seattle)

These restaurants are delivering their food in style. Chef-owner Daisley Gordon of Cafe Campagne pulled out his Rad Power Bike to make deliveries, Lois Ko of Sweet Alchemy has been delivering ice cream with no fee or order minimum out of her car, and Maximillian Petty of Eden Hill Provisions converted an old jeep into a milkshake truck. 👋 Openings and Closings

Since the pandemic started way back when, restaurants have been trying their hardest to roll with all the punches thrown at them. Some of them have been more successful than others. The result is a restaurant scene, unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Iconic restaurants are shuttering both temporarily and permanently, while some are getting inventive with their business tactics and others are continuing to open despite everything.

Here’s a round-up of openings, along with permanent and temporary closures from the last month:

Openings:

New this week:

🍚 Secret Congee opened in Wallingford on Wednesday. Head over to the health food shop Juisala and you’ll find the takeout spot doling out the warm comfort food.

🍜 The pop-up Ramen Ramen is set to dish out piping hot bowls of the dish from a food truck in Hillman City starting today. Sam Choy’s Poke to the Max co-founder Max Heigh is the brain behind this new operation.

🍪 Temple Pastries makes its debut today in its brick and mortar location. The Central District bakery is known for its sourcing of local ingredients and sugared cruffins.

New this month:

🍩 The Flour Box opened at the very beginning of the month and their brioche doughnuts have been selling out in minutes. If you want a taste of these decadent breakfast treats, then you’ll need to pre-order online and pick them up. There are no walk-ups.

🌭 Soul Shack on Da Hill is run from a former coffee kiosk on Broadway and offers wings, nachos, sambusas, and their very own handmade hot dogs.

🌶 Get yo spice on at Chengdu Taste. The Sichuan restaurant first opened in California in 2013 and expanded to other cities. Get some of their mung bean jelly noodles and braised dongpo pork for takeout at their outpost in the International District.

Closings:

Last chance to eat here:
🌱 The James Beard award-winning restaurant Tilth announced its permanent closure yesterday. The restaurant will remain open for takeout and day-of patio reservations through Oct. 30.

🥘 Acclaimed Frelard restaurant, Tarsan i Jane announced their plans to sell the restaurant and move back to Los Angeles soon, though the specific date is unknown. So make sure to grab a meal before now rather than later.

🥖 You still have time to visit Boat Street Kitchen & Bistro. But the small French cafe in Belltown has announced that they will be permanently closing starting Nov. 15.

Permanently closed:

🗿The popular vegan restaurant No Bones Beach Club officially closed its doors for good. The Ballard restaurant also has locations in Portland, which also has closed, and Chicago, which remains temporarily closed.

🥐 The Chophouse Row bakery, Amandine Bakeshop closed at the very end of September meaning there will be one less place for a decent macaroon in Seattle.

Closed temporarily:

🍳 This one isn’t goodbye forever, but Beth’s Cafe — the iconic 24-hour diner where hangovers are healed with enormous cinnamon rolls — has closed temporarily.

🎣 Two of Ivar’s full-service restaurants are also on a hiatus until next spring at least. The fish bars will remain open as will their location in Mukilteo.
