Hunt for buried treasure, have a very merry unbirthday, & 16 things to do in Seattle this week

Believe it or not, a new month starts this week. With streets closing down for block parties all over the city, a treasure hunt, an Alice in Wonderland-themed tea party, and the culmination of Seafair, this is your chance to start August off strong. 💪

MONDAY
Build your own webpage. Curious about code? Go to a free intro class on HTML and CSS that’ll get you started on the basics. (Downtown)

Go to an anti-pipeline concert. Indie musicians will perform and all the proceeds will support “First Nations legal action to stop Kinder Morgan’s oil pipeline expansion” and protect the Salish Sea. (Columbia City)

TUESDAY
Go to your neighborhood block party. National Night Out events get neighbors together to hang out and raise awareness about crime prevention. In Seattle, that means a bunch of streets all over the city are closing down and hosting block parties. Take a look at the map to find out what’s going on in your neighborhood. (All over)

Build your brand. Join a star-studded lineup (e.g. Seattle Storm’s Sue Bird) as they share tips and ideas for how to get people to talk about you and/or your business. If you don’t get all your burning questions answered during Q&A, there’s plenty of networking time before and after. (Capitol Hill)

School your friends on the eclipse. Maybe you’ve heard there’s a total solar eclipse happening August 21? Hear an expert give answers to questions ranging from “Why has it been so long since the last eclipse?” to “How do I keep my eyes safe?” (Queen Anne)

WEDNESDAY
Salute the people serving our country. Personnel from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy are shoring up here for Seafair Fleet Week; Wednesday is the big boat parade, and make sure to stop by sometime between Thursday and Sunday, too, for a free ship tour! 🚢 (Elliott Bay)

Read quietly, with company. Did you know there’s a silent reading party every first Wednesday of the month at the Sorrento Hotel? Get there early, ‘cause spots fill up fast (plus, there’s free music to entertain you until the party starts). (First Hill)

THURSDAY
Get into modern art. The big Seattle Art Fair is hosting tons of modern art all weekend, and there’s a three-story showcase of contemporary art from the Pacific Northwest happening in tandem with the big fair through August 27.

What’s a sanctuary city, anyway? Several panelists, including City Councilmember Lorena González, explain how immigrants are being protected and who’s doing the protecting here in Seattle. (Pioneer Square)

FRIDAY
Dive into Seafair
. The time has come for the big weekend culmination of all things Seafair, a.k.a. Seattle’s height-of-summer summer bash. Check out the schedule and plan out how you’re going to navigate all the boat-racing, plane-flying, music-listening, and food-eating. (Columbia City)

Celebrate African-American culture. Bring the fam to the Umoja Festival & Parade to honor African-American “beauty, brilliance, resilience and unity in The Pacific NW,” support black-owned businesses, listen to good music, watch dance performances, and eat yummy food. (Central District)

SATURDAY
Hunt for buried treasure. Team up with a friend (think “Amazing Race”) and dash around the city completing challenges to unlock a treasure map that’ll help you dig up the grand prize — if you get there first. (All over)

Tots. And. Beer. Need we say more? Go to this fest, eat tater tots, drink brews, and take it easy. (Beacon Hill)

SUNDAY
Honor the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
. The floating of lanterns on Green Lake has happened every year since 1984, it’s the oldest and largest in the world outside of Japan, and it’s a way for us to reflect on the past and promote peace. (Green Lake)

Have a very merry unbirthday. Dress up in steampunk Alice and Wonderland garb for this tea party, croquet game, and dance at Gas Works. The croquet winner and person with the best costume get prizes. Here’s a tip: BYOTC (Bring Your Own Tea Cup). (Wallingford)

Going to one of these events? We’d love to hear how it goes. Send us your thoughts and maybe a pic to [email protected] and we’ll share it back.
