The holiday struggle is real — and we want to hear your stories

The holiday season is officially in full swing — beautiful lights, holiday markets, real-life reindeer, and more are popping up all across our city.

It’s all glittering and festive, but sometimes this holiday cheer can be overwhelming. And let’s get real – the holidays can be a complicated time of year. Because they so strongly emphasize the relationships in our lives, they can make some of us feel stressed, anxious, and even isolated.

So tell us: What’s your holiday struggle? How do you combat feelings of stress or loneliness? What’s a bright spot you can offer to others who might need it?

There’s no struggle too big or too small – whether it’s the pressure of spending lots of money, political talk with family around the dinner table or not being able to be with those you love.

Drawing inspiration from PostSecret, we’re trying out a little experiment. We’re calling it The Holiday Struggle project, and we created a postcard to be your canvas.

Here’s how to contribute.

Step 1: Upload this postcard to your digital tool of choice. (e.g. Photoshop, Word, Google docs, etc.) You can also print it out, cut along the perforated lines, and scan it onto your computer or upload a 5×7-inch document.

Step 2: Get creative with your design. You can offer your feelings, advice — whatever feels right.

Step 3: Scan or snap a photo of your postcard and e-mail it to [email protected] or upload it using the form at the bottom of this page by Dec. 20.

Need some inspiration? Here’s an example I created:

That’s cool. Just let us know when you send us your submission.

Here’s an example we received from someone who wants to remain anonymous.

We’ll share these back with you soon after. Our hope is you find a little bit of comfort and inspiration in each other’s stories.
