What Seattle is talking about

An anti-police-union protest ended in 18 arrests on Sunday night. About 100 people marched from the International District to the Seattle Police Officers Guild building in SoDo. Police declared the march a riot and deployed pepper spray and blast balls. (The Seattle Times)

Experience an augmented reality art show at the Seattle Design Festival. In an effort to help sustain the BLM movement, Seattle designers at GGLO have created an app that lets users discover art installations around the city. The app to see the virtual artworks will be available for at least the duration of the festival. (Crosscut)

Bikers will have a say in the new Beacon Hill Bike Route Project. The project will provide greater connectivity in Southeast Seattle with three segments. Construction is slated to begin in 2022 and those who want a say in what the routes will look like can participate in info and Q&A sessions as well as take this online survey. Another one bites the dust. Beloved U-District icon Cafe Racer was bought in 2017 when it ran into financial trouble, but the pandemic has forced it to close its doors for good. The good news?  It’ll keep kicking as an online radio station, Cafe Racer Radio, and will only play music from Washington state. (Eater Seattle)

The UW BLM chapter is using art as protest. Every day this month, people are welcomed to create art to cover the George Washington statue in Red Square. UW BLM has joined to support UW’s Black Student Union in demanding that the statue be removed and more Black faculty hired, among other points. (The Stranger)

💖 We do things differently around here

It’s not a coincidence that our newsletters these days are focused on making sense of the chaos and connecting you with resources and opportunities to help, instead of stoking fear and panic.

Frankly, we do things differently because we pay the bills differently.

Unlike many other publishers, The Evergrey’s business model isn’t all about selling eyeballs to advertisers and trying to be the biggest billboard in town.

We succeed when we build trust — and when our readers reward that trust by becoming supporting members.

It’s a difficult time to spend money. We get that. But if you can invest $8/month — or $80/year — to support our work, we promise to keep doing things differently and being a voice you can trust, especially in times like these. 💖

One more thing...

The heatwave may be over for the time being but that doesn’t mean that the season for ice cream is. Seattle Met has put together a list of the best places to get the frozen treat in the city.

I hereby challenge you to visit all of them on the list and report back to me which one is in fact the best ice cream spot. I cannot promise a reward only that your stomach will be incredibly happy (lactose-intolerant friends please remember a Lactaid).

I’ll see you back here tomorrow!
