💥 The Seattle Sounders hand Portland a ‘sound’ defeat

What Seattle is talking about

A new program to keep low-level offenders out of jail was launched last week by Seattle’s municipal court. The idea comes from the racial disparities seen in low-level cases and intends to stop the criminal justice system’s revolving door by providing long-term support for defendants. In most cases these sorts of offenses are “crimes of desperation” due to hunger or lack of shelter. (The Seattle Times)

Mayor Jenny Durkan vetoed city council’s revised 2020 budget on Friday. This includes cuts to SPD, which protestors have been demanding. The council has 30 business days to override the veto with a two-thirds vote. (Crosscut)

A new COVID-19 testing site is coming to Chief Sealth High School. The site was chosen to serve some of Seattle’s hardest-hit communities. The hope is to make easy access to testing available to the South Park communities, which have a large Latinx population. (South Seattle Emerald)

Gig workers are struggling to make ends meet with new competition. Those who had been doing gig work before the pandemic have seen their incomes drop during it. Between all the new people signing up for gig work and the limited number of platforms still offering work, they’ve struggled to earn what they usually do. (KUOW)

Piroshky Piroshky is on the move. Due to the lack of tourists going through Pike Place Market where their flagship location is, the Russian bakery has started running a pop-up outside the Russian Community Center in Capitol Hill. The bakery has also been doing deliveries to the greater Seattle area plus the East Side and South Sound. (Capitol Hill Seattle Blog)

💖 We do things differently around here

It’s not a coincidence that our newsletters these days are focused on making sense of the chaos and connecting you with resources and opportunities to help, instead of stoking fear and panic.

Frankly, we do things differently because we pay the bills differently.

Unlike many other publishers, The Evergrey’s business model isn’t all about selling eyeballs to advertisers and trying to be the biggest billboard in town.

We succeed when we build trust — and when our readers reward that trust by becoming supporting members.

It’s a difficult time to spend money. We get that. But if you can invest $8/month — or $80/year — to support our work, we promise to keep doing things differently and being a voice you can trust, especially in times like these. 💖

One more thing...

One of my favorite things to take local pride in is the existence of KEXP. And their latest project “Good Mail Day” only reaffirms my love for the station. In support of the United States Postal Service, the station is asking listeners to send them a postcard, fan mail, love letters, and everything in between by September 22 when they’ll read the messages and play song requests that are sent their way.

If you’re like me and think this is a brilliant and fun way to support the U.S.P.S., you can send your message to the address below:

That’s it for today. Catch you tomorrow! ✌️
