Make your own medicine & 15 other things to do in Seattle this week

Have you been itching to try something new lately? This is your week. Whether you want to make your own medicine, get into local theater, or show off your wealth of Harry Potter knowledge, there’s a cool event for you to explore. So go on, get out there. 🙌

MONDAY
Get out on the water. Every other Monday during the summer, you can join a group at Elliott Bay for guided kayaking and paddleboarding. Bring your own kayak or board, or RSVP early to reserve one from the marina. (Magnolia)

Make medicine. Learn how to make three staples of herbal medicine: Teas, tinctures, and vinegars (you’ll get to bring the stuff you make home with you). Bring an apron! And if it’s sold out, don’t despair: There’s another class next Monday. (Capitol Hill)

TUESDAY
Are you a trivia wizard? Prove it at Harry Potter trivia night. There’s lots of interest on the Facebook page, so it’s probably a good idea to buy your ticket early (unless you have an invisibility cloak, then maybe you can just sneak in 😉). (Capitol Hill)

Dunn dun. Dunn dun. Dundundundundundun. Recognize that theme music? Go watch the classic movie Jaws and learn about sharks from a wildlife expert. If Tuesday’s sold out by the time you read this, no worries, there’s another showtime on Wednesday. 🦈 (Central District)

WEDNESDAY
Talk race with our sheriff. The Black Law Enforcement Association of Washington and King County Sheriff John Urquhart are meeting up to talk about charged topics like “race, police use of deadly force, initiative-940, de-escalation and mental health crisis training.” (Leschi)

THURSDAY
Go to the theater. Musical sci-fi classic Little Shop of Horrors is on stage in Redmond, or watch a local playwright’s play in which the main character is a member of Seattle’s Black Panther Party in the 60s.

How do you feel about gentrification? If you’re not a fan, there’s a group that’s meeting to talk about ways to take action against it. (Central District)

FRIDAY
Celebrate SLU. South Lake Union’s block party will have all the makings of a typical festival (yummy food, music, etc.), but something makes it a little different: There’ll be materials for you to make your own letter-press poster, and teams of Seattle designers will compete and try to impress KEXP with the best big poster. (South Lake Union)

Get fresh air & fresh art. This year’s SAM Remix party is inspired by the insanely popular Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors exhibit. Explore new art in the Olympic Sculpture Park, get a guided tour from a local creative, and do some creating yourself. P.S.: Wanna get in for free? Be one of the first 50 partygoers to show up wearing all polka dots. (Belltown)

Eat a fresh gyro. Foodie phenom The Halal Guys started out as a food cart in NYC and is now making its way all over the world. Celebrate the grand opening of its first Seattle spot, complete with chances to get free swag and free food. (Pioneer Square)

SATURDAY
Be a morning person. Remember when we wrote about Daybreaker Seattle, the folks who host pre-work dance parties? They’re hosting a rooftop bash with a DJ and a killer view of Lake Union…at 10 a.m. on a Saturday. Tickets are selling out fast, so get on it. (South Lake Union)

So, about Seattle transportation… It’s a big issue right now, and you can get in on the conversation at Transportation Camp, where people will share their opinions, debate issues, and talk solutions. (Downtown)

Happy retirement, #11! The Mariners are retiring Edgar Martinez’s jersey number at a special ceremony before the game, and 45,000 fans get a cool plaque to remember it by. (Psst… you can get a replica jersey at Sunday’s game). (SoDo)

SUNDAY
Go to a park party. Celebrate Othello Park and the cultures of its surrounding communities with food, music, art, and a petting zoo (the website says you can pet a camel!). (Rainier Valley)

Hear spooky stories on the water. Sail across Lake Union as you sing songs and listen to tales of sea monsters. (Lake Union)
