SEATTLE’S SPOT FOR FRESH DANCE MOVES

Go to Washington Hall on a Monday night and you’ll step onto “the best floor in Seattle.”

Washington Hall is an iconic, historic place that’s played host to the likes of Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and Jimi Hendrix. But on “Soulful Mondays,” it’s a playground for anyone who’s into street-style dance and wants to master the moves — whatever their level.

Soulful Mondays are just one example of the many community events put on by 206Zulu, a service org that’s all about celebrating hip-hop culture — and keeps the beat at the heart of the Central District.

» Got a minute? Bounce with the b-boys, b-girls, poppers, and lockers in our quick video.

Want to try out some street dancing yourself? Get to Washington Hall for the next Soulful Monday on Jan. 7. from 6 to 9 p.m. or check out the rest of 206Zulu’s events and how to get involved. Curious about all things Central District? Drop your q’s here, and we’ll answer one in the new year.

NOW HERE’S WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON IN YOUR CITY

‘Looks like Pepto Bismol Park.’ Well, that went well. The Mariners and T-Mobile announced yesterday that the magenta-loving company just sealed the naming rights to what we now know as Safeco Field. For the next 25 years, at least, it’ll be called T-Mobile Park. And predictably, people are… adjusting. “Does this mean the umps are gonna start missing calls?” goes one joke on Facebook. Fans were not in the greatest mood, seeing as our boys failed for the 17th straight year to make it to the playoffs. What’s your reaction to the name? Add it as a GIF to the collection on our Facebook thread. ⚾️ (GeekWire, Mariners Blog)

A program that changes everything. You can’t afford to buy Christmas gifts for your kid. Then one year, you finally can. That’s one way that the Seattle Conservation Corps has meant the world to its participants — locals who’ve struggled with homelessness and earn a living wage while they train for construction jobs around the city. The program started in 1986 and is serving 50 people right now. “I tell everyone I can about the program,” Christopher Townsell, who’s 24, told Crosscut’s Lilly Fowler. “Never had a real job besides fast-food.” (Crosscut)

Our seasons, tho. Another storm’s coming tonight. Lots of wind, rain, the works. Nothing like that tornado that hit Port Orchard this week — the strongest in our state in 32 years — but a storm nonetheless. And speaking of the weather, Seattleite Erin Kendig earned some kudos on this week for this handy drawing that pretty much sums up Seattle’s seasons — complete with a week of “fake spring” in February, “smoke” season in August, and all this grey. “I like how it was dark at like 1:45 today,” she grumbled on Facebook. We feel you, Erin. P.S. Thanks for spelling grey with an “e.” 🙌 (The Seattle Times, Facebook)

Umm, thanks? Gifting ain’t easy. And sometimes, we just plain fail. What’s the most “umm, thanks??” gift you’ve ever gotten over the holidays? Add it to the hall of shame we’re building on our Facebook page. Among the highlights: An in-sink disposal given to Whitney Rearick, a Snuggie “given without humor or ironic intent” to Rachel Ciprotti, and the argyle socks/flashlight combo gifted to Ken Cousins. Need a little gifting help? Check out our list of 40 awesome Seattle-made gift ideas, and you should be golden. 🎁
