📰 ‘This is like something out of The Onion’

The new year is almost here, and we can’t wait to share and explore even more with you in 2019. That’s why we’re launching an expanded membership program for our favorite newsletter subscribers. (Hey, that’s you!)

When you join The Evergrey as a member for $8 a month, you can deepen your connection to a community of thoughtful, active Seattleites like you who make this place great. Plus, you’ll be investing in more people-powered local journalism to serve our city. (Hey, that’s us!)

Your membership will help create more projects like our homelessness series, where we invited journalists around the city to help us answer your questions about one of Seattle’s most complex issues, more unique ways to explore our city like our volunteer field trips, and more opportunities for us to dive in together on the issues, ideas, people, and places that you want to get to know in your city.

NOW HERE’S WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON IN YOUR CITY

‘This is like something out of The Onion.’ That’s what one city council member said about a plan for Amazon to add tens of thousands of jobs without adding a whole lot to the local infrastructure. We’re not talking about Seattle, though. This happened in the Queens area of New York City. That’s one of the two places Amazon is planning to drop a huge new headquarters, and Seattle Met summed up the tense three-hour meeting between city officials and Amazon reps last week like this: “Amazon got the scrutiny in New York it never faced in Seattle.” 📰 (Seattle Met)

Hidden in plain sight. Alumni from Gonzaga University over in Spokane woke up to some disturbing news yesterday. For more than 30 years — up until 2016 — Jesuit priests accused of sexual misconduct lived right there on campus. That stunning fact is the result of an investigation that also found that most of the abusive priests had worked with Native communities around the Northwest and Alaska. They were sent to live at the Cardinal Bea House at Gonzaga when they retired because the Jesuit order is obligated to provide for retired priests, and the on-campus building was a place where they could be “monitored.” (Reveal and the Center for Investigative Reporting)

Got love for ‘80s power ballads and $4.7 million? You could be the next owner of Interlake Drive Manor in Capitol Hill. That’s a 4 bed/4 bath house that was a fancy schmancy inn 100 years ago and — much more recently — belonged to Ann Wilson of the band Heart. We see there’s a ballroom and six fireplaces, so… you’ll invite us over, right? 😉 (Seattle Refined)

High, not bright. Locals in the cannabis industry freaked when our state’s liquor and cannabis board said it might ban all cannabis-infused candy. So instead, they’ve banned candies that look too much like what they’re not — regular kids’ candy. That means all brightly colored edibles are going to have to be “dulled.” In color only, of course. (The Seattle Times)
